How To Make Your Computer FAST!!
Lets face it, we have all become addicted to speed. Patience is gone. We want everything now. Especially when we are using our computers trying to search for the latest cat videos online.
But computer speed is fleeting and elusive. New computers are fast, but over time, they accumulate junk, new programs and software updates are loaded and hard drives fill up resulting in slow boot up times and performance lags. While a full tune-up can have positive results. The best way to turn your computer in to a screaming beast is to add a solid state drive.
A solid state drive is a type of hard drive that relies on memory chips rather than a spinning mechanical disk. While they are more expensive, the performance improvements are impressive.
For example, I recently installed a solid state drive in a Dell laptop for a realtor from Overland Park. The computer had an i5 processor and 4GB of RAM, a nice business class laptop. It wasnt really slow, but it wasnt fast, until the SSD was added…….it now only takes 9.58 seconds for the PC to start up. 9.58 SECONDS!!!!!!…….more than a minute faster than with the old hard drive. In addition, it took nearly 3 hours to copy all the data off of the old hard drive but only took 40 minutes to transfer it all back. Programs open almost immediately after clicking on the icon. We also recently did this in an entry level laptop for a teacher in Shawnee and got similar results.
For a couple of hundred bucks, this PC now has the performance of computers that cost several hundred dollars more. And, its highly unlikely that this hard drive will ever fail while traditional hard drives have a failure rate of about 10% per year. If you have ever had a hard drive fail, you know what a pain it is to recover data and programs. But, this isnt a license to abandon doing regular backups of your data.
